Video Conferencing: Tips for a Successful Job Interview

Here at IAV our Whippany, NJ video conference rooms are used for many different purposes.  One of the most common uses is for job interviews.  In my previous post I described general tips for video conferencing such as arriving at the facility early so you could settle in.  In this post I will go into more specific guidelines for the interviewer and the interviewee.

The interviewer should have the resume on hand.  This way they will know who they are speaking to and what questions to ask.  Both attendees should be aware of the time constraint.  The room will be booked for a certain period of time: usually one hour.  This should be known to the person being interviewed so they can make the best possible impression by using the time effectively.  It also should be known to the interviewer so they can ask all the questions that they need to.

All time zone differences must be known to everyone as well.  If a video conference involves two states on different sides of the country there will be a significant time difference.  Some states may even be split into two time zones.  It is also worth noting that Arizona doesn’t follow daylight savings time.  If all this sounds confusing, that’s because it is.  For this reason it’s always a good idea to confirm with the other location what time zone they are and their current time.  This is also why we take care of all the details when a video conference is booked with us.

Time is important to everyone.  That is why it is very important to use the time set for a job interview as effectively as possible.  Just because it is being done over video doesn’t mean there is reason to not be as prepared or attentive.  Video conferencing systems create an experience that transmits video and audio smoothly and sharply.  In other words, you need to be at your best because everything will be crystal clear.  Here's a link where you can learn more about our Video Conference Services

One Last Thing:  When in the Video Conference Room never assume that you are not connected or “Live”!

Video Conferencing: General Tips

Video conferencing is a great technology.  It cuts down travel time and allows for meetings with true communication even though the participants are separated by hundreds or possibly thousands of miles.  A few tips can help keep things running smoothly.  First, it is important to arrive early.  This applies to any meeting but it is especially important for video conferencing.  By arriving early the technician can make sure the camera is focused on you and explain the important features of the unit.  It also gives you time to feel comfortable in the video conference room and appear prepared once the conference is under way.  As for appearance, it is important to avoid wearing shirts and blouses with stripes and patterns.  This is because these can cause flicker and distortion in the video.  The last and most important tip is to give a small pause before you speak.  This is because there can be a very slight delay in the transmission.  Waiting just one second before responding to a question will help you avoid speaking over the person at the other side of the conference.   Following these steps will help ensure a smooth and successful video conference.
